Penang Halal International (PHI) is an agency that facilitates and promotes the halal industry in Penang. Formerly known as PIHH Development Sdn. Bhd., the agency came to us to give the brand a refreshed new look. We were instrumental in developing their new visual identity that perfectly translates their goals of evolving Penang’s Halal scene through innovation.

Putting Penang in the Global Spotlight
In order to communicate the brand to a wider global audience, we created a modern and sophisticated brand mark that conveys the confidence of PHI in promoting the Halal industry. The brand mark consists of a logomark and a wordmark, two different elements that complement each other to form a powerful message. The logomark is an abstraction of the iconic Penang Bridge, with the key identifying component being the two towers supported by cables, topped with a crescent moon, a symbol synonymous with the teachings of Islam. The two towers form a diamond to represent the strokes of Arabic calligraphy found in the Halal Mark, while the enclosed area in the centre symbolises Penang as a halal hub, bridging local industries with the world. The curved edges of the wordmark bears semblance to the Halal Arabic strokes and the essence of Penang is expressed through the icon of the Areca Palm tree in the tagline. Our primary colours, Cobalt Blue and Dijon Gold, for PHI were also chosen specifically to symbolise Penang and the state’s steady and evolving Halal industry.
Creating Halal Opportunities for All
Following the refresh, the agency saw an increase in reception and recognition amongst its audience. The exercise was successful in expanding PHI’s mission to promote the local halal industry to a wider, international scale.
